What are Chibibel and BelBel?What are Poser/DAZ Figures? Why do people like them so much?

Normally when you see highly detailed 3D characters around dA the person who has submitted the image on dA has modeled the figure/character themselves from scratch. Normally these kinds of figures are kind of like how you get resin figurines in real life- highly detailed but they can't move - they are always in one pose. Some 3D characters are able to move but normally they are not available for purchase from the artists and/or you would have to pay royalties to the artists as well - it can get complicated and expensive very quickly.

3D artists saw that there was a market for 3D models which could move and be posed so that you can create lots more art with them. The main creators of these kinds of 3D models are DAZ and Poser and most of these kinds of movable royalty-free models are available in the DAZ or Poser related stores- thus they are called DAZ/Poser Figures even though the specific models may have different names like Chibibel or BelBel or Victoria etc.

These kinds of figures are like dolls - you can change their clothes and put them in different poses- they sometimes may not be as detailed as say the stuff that professionals come up with but that's not the point.

What is also great about Poser and DAZ figures is that they are licensed for commercial use- what ever art you make with them you can sell or make money from- you can't sell the 3D model themselves but your art is yours to do with as you like. Also you can create stuff for the figures like the clothing and the texture packs for the clothing ( like what we are making ) and make money from that.

The Poser/DAZ community supports the figures with items- so 3D artists like me and others make stuff for others to use with the 3D models.

I hope this kind of explains the difference:

Poser/DAZ models - can move and when you buy them you get the right to make art with them, they are affordable, you can find items like clothing for the figure in different stores and from other artists.

Other 3D characters:
-modeled from scratch by the artists, normally not available for purchase, only one pose but can also move sometimes, can be very expensive to buy the model to use for your art, have to make items yourself for the figure.

How do I get going? How does it work?

Step one is to go to DAZ www.daz3d.com/i/products/daz_s…? and get the 3D software. You need either DAZ Studio or Poser to be able to use the 3D models - at DAZ you can also buy the Chibibel and/or BelBel 3D model.

You install the software and the 3D model and from there you can start creating art. There are tutorials for things like how to add clothes to your figure, adding backgrounds. Best of all is that you can use the other 3D models ( buildings etc) which you find on the DAZ Store and other 3D stores.

So when you learn the software (which is really really easy to do) you can add say a 3D model of a building with BelBel and your build up your image ( like in real life if you where creating a set for dolls) you pose BelBel and Chibibel as you want and then you render.

You end up with a 2D image of what you have created and then can submit it to dA or sell it or what ever you want to do with it.

This also kind of answers question one too but part of the reason why the group likes BelBel and Chibibel is because they have that nice anime look to them - most DAZ/Poser characters look like real people- not like anime characters. BelBel and Chibibel don't have a lot of items ( clothing and the like) so people haven't been able to make too much art with them - thus we have 'adopted' these figures and plan to support them with the magazine and content like the SAKURA pack.

When you work with the software you'll get used to the terms a bit more ( it's really easy) - getting set up may cost a bit but compared to using software like 3dsmax or Maya - DAZ is very cheap- and you can have a lot of fun too because you don't have to create everything yourself. You buy the 3d models you want and use them in your art. There are also a lot of Poser/DAZ freebies so you can spend a lot less money if you search hard enough.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask! Simply send a note to the group or comment on the group's page and we will try our best to answer your question!
